Who is the Friend of the Sea Organisation?

Friend of the Sea is a project of the World Sustainability Organisation, an international trademark registered with humanitarian and Friend of the Seaenvironmental conservation mission. Friend of the Sea has become one of the leading certification standard for products and services that respect and protect the marine environment. This certification awards sustainable practices in fisheries, aquaculture and Omega3 oils.

It is the only sustainable fisheries certification programme that is recognised and supervised globally by a National Accreditation Body.

Friend of the Sea certified products and services ensure that you are making the best choice for the health of the planet as well as the lives of the workers. All the certified products and services are subject to strict and independent audits. These audits verify environmental and social standards. As the mission of this organisation is to protect aquatic resources, they promote sustainable practices in fishing, aquaculture, nutraceutical products, dolphin and whale watching, the ornamental fish trade, and shopping.

Friend of the Sea works globally with nations state, seafood and shipping industries, scientists, NGOs, and the public to promote sustainable use of the oceans and conservation of the aquatic habitation. Therefore, they play a fundamental role in the global sustainability movement.

For wild-caught products, Friend of the Sea certified products must guarantee that:

  • Target stock is not overexploited
  • Maximum 8% discard of bycatch
  • No bycatch of endangered species
  • No impact on seabedFuel efficiency
  • Compliance with regulation
  • Social accountability
  • Chain of custody
  • Sustainable shipping.

For farmed products, in order to be certified, there must be guarantee of:

  • Fuel efficiency
  • No impact on critical habitat such as mangroves and wetlands
  • Escapes and bycatch reduction
  • Compliance of water quality parameter
  • No GMO or growth hormones
  • Social accountability
  • Chain of custody
  • Sustainable shipping.

Friend of the Sea is now a global operation with a worldwide presence including 44 approves fisheries, 770 certified companies, 3,000 products, and 150 commercial species.
