What do MSC and ASC really mean?
You may have noticed on various packages for fish there are MSC and ASC stickers, but do you know what they actually mean and what’s the difference between the two? Simply put, both of these certificates highlight sustainability in seafood but MSC is for wild-caught seafood and ASC is for aquaculture.
The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a non-profit organisation that recognises and rewards efforts taken to safeguard seafood supplies for the future and protect oceans. The focus of sustainability for MSC certification is on leaving enough fish in the ocean, respecting habitats, and ensuring those who depend on fishing can maintain their livelihoods. The measurement of a fishery’s sustainability has 3 main principles: sustainable fish stocks, minimising environmental impact, and effective fisheries management. When you see the blue MSC label, this means that the product is wild, traceable, and sustainable. This product has been independently assessed and certified for the impact on wild fish population and ecosystem they’re part of.
The Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) is an independent, international, non-profit organisation that manages the world’s leading certification programme for responsible aquaculture. The ASC works with aquaculture producers, seafood processors, retail and foodservice companies, scientists, conservation groups, and consumers to ensure sustainable aquaculture. Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production system in the world, with more than half of the fish consumed globally coming from aquaculture. ASC certified farms demonstrate that they are well managed and minimise adverse environmental and social impacts. When you see the ASC logo, you can be assured that you are buying seafood products that come from farms work towards environmental sustainability and social responsibilities. ASC certified farms deliver cleaner seabeds, cleaner water, healthier fish, and preserve the diversity of the species and wild population.
We want everyone to enjoy seafood responsibly, which is why all Big Prawn products are sustainably sourced with many all of our products achieving sustainable certifications, including many ASC products.
