Taking a leading role in Crayfish Sustainability

Our MD, Will Rash, has been instrumental in driving forward the policies of the Crayfish sustainability program.

The Big Prawn Co. is the largest importer of crayfish to the UK, procuring over 700 metric tons a year. We purchase from sites that have traceability and full BRC certification in the Hubei Province of China. Although it is regarded that the fishery can be considered sustainable due to the invasive nature of the species, the low impact fishing methods and because the Chinese government complies with legislation to deter IUU;
there is a deficit of sustainable data of the Red swamp Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii) in China. In conjunction with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, SAI Global and the Fisheries involved we have collaborated to form The Hubei Province Red Swamp Crayfish FIP (Fishery Improvement Project) with the aims of improving documentation and data collection of the operational characteristics of the fishery.DSC_3383_webThe work plan of the FIP aims to improve upon the data availability, data collection systems and data use to support the long, term sustainable management of Hubei Province Red swamp crayfish.
